PinkShortlisted for the Financial Times/McKinsey Business Book of the Year AwardPlenty of experts argue that anyone who wants to develop a skill, play an instrument, or lead their field should start early, focus intensely, and rack up as many hours of deliberate practice as possible. If you dabble or delay, you’ll never catch up to the people who got a head start. But a closer look at research on the world’s top performers, from professional athletes to Nobel laureates, shows that early specialization is the exception, not the rule.David Epstein examined the world’s most successful athletes, artists, musicians, inventors, forecasters and scientists. He discovered that in most fields—especially those that are complex and unpredictable—generalists, not specialists, are primed to excel. Generalists often find their path late, and they juggle many interests rather than focusing on one. They’re also more creative, more agile, and able to make connections their more specialized peers can’t see.Provocative, rigorous, and engrossing, Range makes a compelling case for actively cultivating inefficiency. Failing a test is the best way to learn. Frequent quitters end up with the most fulfilling careers. The most impactful inventors cross domains rather than deepening their knowledge in a single area. Rates of diagnosis of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are skyrocketing, throughout America and the rest of the world. U.S. rates of youth diagnosis have increased 40% from just a decade ago. Adults with ADHD are now the fastest-growing segment of the population receiving diagnosis and medication. The disorder is painful and sometimes disabling for individuals and tremendously costly for society; yet, widespread misinformation, skepticism, and unanswered questions have jeopardized effective diagnosis and treatment. Researched and written by Stephen Hinshaw, an international expert on ADHD, and Katherine Ellison, a Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist and author, ADHD: What Everyone Needs to Know® is the go-to book for authoritative, current, accurate, and compelling information about the global ADHD epidemic. This book addresses questions such as:· Is ADHD a genuine medical condition or a means of pathologizing active and exploratory behavior?· Do medications for ADHD serve as needed treatments, or are they attempts at social control, designed to bolster profits of pharmaceutical firms? · Has the ADHD label become a ruse by which parents can game the educational system for accommodations?· How do symptoms and impairments related to ADHD differ between girls and women and boys and men? · Why are ADHD medications often used as performance enhancers by college and high-school students? ADHD: What Everyone Needs to Know® clears the air of the most polarizing and misleading information that abounds, providing straight talk and sound guidelines for educators, policymakers, health professionals, parents, and the general public. It shows the reality of ADHD but does not ignore the forces that have pushed up rates of diagnosis to alarmingly high levels.

“When we call someone lazy, we condemn a human being,” writes Mel Levine, M.D. In The Myth of Laziness, the bestselling author of A Mind at a Time shows that children dismissed as unproductive or “lazy” usually suffer from what he calls “output failure”—a neurodevelopmental dysfunction that can continue to cause difficulties into adulthood if left unchecked. The desire to be productive is universal, says Dr. Levine, but that drive can often be frustrated by dysfunctions that obstruct output or productivity. Drawing on his clinical experience and using real-life examples of both children and adults he has worked with, Dr. Levine shows how to identify and remedy these dysfunctions. A child suffering from language production dysfunction, for example, may be incapable of clearly expressing or explaining his thoughts, thereby leading to low productivity in school. A child who has difficulty making choices may wait until it is too late to complete a project or may act impulsively, creating a pattern of bad judgments. Similarly, a child with memory weaknesses may be unable to draw on his accumulated knowledge for an assignment. In each of these cases, as Dr. Levine shows, writing skills are often the key to diagnosing specific causes of output failure.Practical, wise, and compassionate, The Myth of Laziness offers parents and teachers day-to-day strategies and support to prevent output failure and, when necessary, to help children overcome dysfunction and become productive, successful adults.
A new understanding of ADD, along with practical information on how to recognize and treat the disorderA leading expert in the assessment and treatment of Attention Deficit Disorder/Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder dispels myths and offers reassuring, practical information about treatments. Drawing on recent findings in neuroscience and a rich variety of case studies from his own clinical practive, Dr. Thomas E. Brown describes what ADD syndrome is, how it can be recognized at different ages, and how it can best be treated. This is the first book to address the perplexing question about ADD: how can individuals, some very bright, be chronically unable to “pay attention,” yet be able to focus very well on specific tasks that strongly interest them? Brown disputes the “willpower” explanation and explains how inherited malfunctions of the brain’s management system prevent some people from being able to deal adequately with challenging tasks of childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. His book is an authoritative and practical guide for physicians and psychologists, parents and teachers, and the 7 to 9 percent of persons who suffer from ADD/ADHD.
"This volume is a ground-braking first step in standardizing the psychosocial treatment of adults with ADHD." - Dr Sam Goldstein, University of Utah "I think it is a uniquely valuable guide to how psychological thinking and treatment can be helpful to adults with ADHD - I recommend it to all professionals taking on this work." - Professor Eric Taylor, Head of Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, King's College London Institute of Psychiatry "What emerges fro this perspective is clinical wisdom. I could see and feel both the patient and the therapy." - Margaret Weiss, Director of research, ADHD Clinic, Children's and Women's Health Centre, Canada There is increasing recognition of the prevalence of ADHD in adulthood, which is estimated to be around one percent in the general population. These people have often experienced lifelong underachievement; they feel misunderstood and have not received the help they need. Reflecting the growing awareness of this problem, ADHD in Adults provides a comprehensive account of the presentation of adulthood ADHD, its assessment and treatment. Written by experienced practitioners in the field, the book introduces a cognitive behavioural model of ADHD from which the authors developed the Young-Bramham Programme. This is a unique, modular framework for assessing and treating people with adulthood ADHD and associated problems using practical intervention techniques. The book is accompanied by the Young-Bramham Programme Companion Website, www.wiley.com/go/adhdadults that provides downloadable materials for use by clients and therapists. ADHD in Adults is invaluable reading for clinicians working with adult ADHD clients in many different settings including primary care, adult mental health, learning disability, forensic, neuropsychiatry and neuropsychology. It will also be a useful self-help resource for ADHD clients, friends, family and supporters.

Parenting any preschooler can be challenging, but when hyperactivity and impulsivity are extreme, parenting requires extraordinary effort and skill. Parents need tools for helping their children behave in ways that are adaptive and socially appropriate and that will prevent their children from developing additional difficulties. Children who are hyperactive are at risk for developing emotional or behavioral disorders, and research suggests that helping parents to provide firm and consistent limits in a nurturing environment can significantly reduce hyperactivity and associated difficulties.Parenting Hyperactive Preschoolers provides a 14-week parent training and emotion socialization program that aims to help preschoolers who have symptoms of ADHD by teaching parents new ways of interacting with their children. This clinician's manual outlines each session and includes homework forms and handouts for parents and children. The treatment includes behavior management strategies that have been demonstrated to be effective for children with behavior problems and tailors these strategies to the specific needs of hyperactive preschoolers. Because children with ADHD have substantial difficulties with emotion regulation, this as an important component of the treatment protocol. The program is designed to be conducted in a group setting in 90 minute sessions, which also allows parents to receive support and input from each other, but can be easily adapted to sessions with individual parents.
“If you read only one book about attention deficit disorder, it should be Delivered from Distraction.”—Michael Thompson, Ph.D., New York Times bestselling co-author of Raising CainIn 1994, Driven to Distraction sparked a revolution in our understanding of attention deficit disorder. Widely recognized as the classic in the field, the book has sold more than a million copies. Now a second revolution is under way in the approach to ADD, and the news is great. Drug therapies, our understanding of the role of diet and exercise, even the way we define the disorder–all are changing radically. And doctors are realizing that millions of adults suffer from this condition, though the vast majority of them remain undiagnosed and untreated. In this new book, Drs. Edward M. Hallowell and John J. Ratey build on the breakthroughs of Driven to Distraction to offer a comprehensive and entirely up-to-date guide to living a successful life with ADD.As Hallowell and Ratey point out, “attention deficit disorder” is a highly misleading description of an intriguing kind of mind. Original, charismatic, energetic, often brilliant, people with ADD have extraordinary talents and gifts embedded in their highly charged but easily distracted minds. Although the phenomenon of ADHD (Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is well described in children, it is now thought that in up to 60% of cases the symptoms persist into adulthood. This volume reviews our growing knowledge of adult ADHD and presents a transatlantic perspective on the identification, assessment and treatment of the disorder. The introductory section covers the history of ADHD, as well as the epidemiology, consequences, gender differences and legal aspects. Detailed descriptions of the clinical features of ADHD in adults are then given to enhance the reader's clinical recognition and assessment. Subsequent sections cover treatment strategies, emphasising pharmacological, psychological and social interventions. Written and edited by experts internationally renowned for their work in ADHD, this is an essential resource for all mental health workers who encounter adults presenting with neurodevelopmental disorders.
A central source of frustration for most adults with ADHD is that they know what they need to do but they have difficulties turning their intentions into actions. These difficulties also interfere with their ability to use self-help books and to get the most out of psychosocial treatments that provide coping strategies that promise to improve their functioning. Drs. Ramsay and Rostain are experts in the assessment and treatment of adult ADHD and are leaders in the development of effective psychosocial treatments for this group of patients. Their newest book, The Adult ADHD Tool Kit: Using CBT to Facilitate Coping Inside and Out is a coping guide for adults living with ADHD, one that does not just present useful coping strategies but also provides specific tactics designed to help readers implement these skills in their daily lives and brings them to life in a user-friendly format. The authors discuss many different settings in which ADHD may cause difficulties, including work, school, matters of physical health and well-being, and the issue of excessive use of technology. Although written for consumers, clinicians will find the book to be a clinically useful tool for their adult patients with ADHD, serving as a companion to the newly updated and expanded second edition of Drs. Ramsay and Rostain’s professional treatment manual, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Adult ADHD: An Integrative Psychosocial and Medical Approach.
This is a clear and concise guide to classroom practice for teachers dealing with pupils with attention deficit / hyperactivity disorder, a condition that is estimated to affect on average one in every twenty-five children. In this new and revised edition, the authors present in an accessible style and with regard for the everyday realities of the classroom life: key issues commonly raised by teachers about AD/HD; sources of information on the nature and assessment of AD/HD; advice to teachers on how to communicate with both parents and professionals; and practical classroom strategies and interventions for effectively tackling the condition. All teachers of pupils in the 5-16 age range will benefit from the explanation and advice on AD/HD offered in this resource book. It will be of particular interest to SENCOs, teachers concerned with Home School Liaison and those concerned with emotional and behavioral difficulties in the classroom.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Adult ADHD: An Integrative Psychosocial and Medical Approach has been revised, updated, and expanded for this second edition and remains the definitive book for clinicians seeking to treat adults with ADHD. Clinicians will continue to benefit from the presentation of an evidence-supported treatment approach for adults with ADHD that combines cognitive behavioral therapy and pharmacotherapy adapted for this challenging clinical population. The updated edition of the book offers new and expanded case examples, and the authors emphasize more detailed, clinician-friendly "how to" instructions for the delivery of specific interventions for adult patients with ADHD. Understanding that most adults with ADHD say, "I know exactly what I need to do, but I just cannot make myself do it," the book pays special attention to the use of implementation strategies to help patients carry out the necessary coping skills to achieve improvements in functioning and well-being in their daily lives. In addition to providing an outline of their treatment approach, Drs. Ramsay and Rostain provide an up-to-date review of the current scientific understanding of the etiology, developmental course, and life outcomes of adults with ADHD as well as the components of an thorough diagnostic evaluation. As an added clinical resource, Drs. Ramsay and Rostain have also produced a companion patient handbook written for adults with ADHD, The Adult ADHD Tool Kit: Using CBT to Facilitate Coping Inside and Out, which clinicians can use with their patients.

Jumpin' Johnny Get Back to Work! : A Child's Guide to ADHD/Hyperactivity
Otto is a high-octane young car whose motor runs too fast. He also has trouble paying attention in school, is easily distracted, and says and does things without thinking. Otto and his parents visit a special mechanic, who prescribes a medicine to help slow down Otto’s racing motor. Otto also meets other mechanics in his pit crew, who will show him ways to be more focused and organized, and teach him ways to get along better with others. This new edition of a classic resource for young children and their families includes the latest advances in the understanding of ADHD. An expanded Note to Parents by the author discusses treatment approaches and current findings about medications, including their possible side effects. From the Note to Parents:Children may be worried or frightened regarding medication. Information can help reduce their worries and correct unrealistic ideas. Many different medications are available for use in ADHD. Often the first choice is from the family of medications called psychostimulants. The term “stimulant” sometimes creates confusion. I am often asked, “Won’t a stimulant cause my child to be even more hyperactive? I definitely don’t want that!” Neither does your doctor. It is helpful to think of these medications as stimulating the pathways in the brain that allow a person to focus and to make more efficient use of their working memory and problem-solving skills. They also help the person be in a position to acquire and practice new problem-solving skills. Problem- solving skills include:1. Stopping and recognizing there’s a problem to be solved;2. Thinking through alternative ways of solving it;3. Thinking about the consequences of each alternative solution;4. Choosing a solution based on how those consequences are valued;5. Devising a strategy for implementing the solution. In daily living, things happen and people respond. In shorthand, let’s say S (denoting something happens) is followed by R (denoting a person’s response), or S-R. Think of the hyphen between S and R as a way to represent the chance to focus. In a person with ADHD, the hyphen is shorter than it is in others. Medications draw the hyphen out more, from S-R to, say, S---R. It is important to understand that medication doesn’t fill in the hyphen, though. Medication doesn’t think things through or make one mindful of alternatives, consequences, or strategies. It doesn’t create or understand values, or make choices for good or ill. The person has to do all that, although he or she can find help from the pit crew.
