Gretchen “Gertie” Hirsch is a passionate home seamstress, a sought-after sewing teacher, and the creator of one of the web’s most popular sewing blogs: Gertie’s New Blog for Better Sewing. The blog began as a way for readers to follow Hirsch’s progress as she stitched all 14 fashions from the iconic 1950s sewing book Vogue’s New Book for Better Sewing (a Julie & Julia–esque experiment for the modern sewist). It quickly became a place for Hirsch to share tutorials and lively posts about sewing as it relates to fashion history, pop culture, body image, and gender. An extension of the blog, Gertie’s New Book for Better Sewing is a hardworking reference title packed with lessons on couture techniques and customization, as well as an inimitable pattern collection featuring 25 wardrobe essentials and variations inspired by vintage fashion and Gertie’s spirited, modern style.Praise for Gertie's New Book For Better Sewing:“If you read Gertie’s New Blog for Better Sewing, you already know that Gretchen Hirsch is all about teaching basic sewing skills that some of us (guilty!) may have skipped right over when we learned to sew. Now you can find all of Gretchen’s sewing knowledge in one place.” —Martha Stewart.com “Like her blog, Hirsch’s book is like a chat with a friend who happens to be an expert seamstress. Even if the vintage-inspired garments aren't your style, there’s plenty to learn from this book.” —Library Journal“The styles are all rocked out with the tattoo-clad Gertie as the model. If you love a retro pattern, then this book is the one for you.” —CraftGossip.com“White paper templates, not tissue! These will make it easier to trace.” —Sew Spoiled“I personally love the finishing details on well-made garments and found this book to be a fantastic resource for adding techniques to my repertoire.” —ThreadBias.com“Maybe my faaavorite part of the book is the Vintage to Modern dictionary. If you ever use vintage patterns or shop for vintage or retro-y clothes, you’ll love this spread!” —Adventures in Dressmaking“The featured wealth of skills in a range of garment-sewing techniques are perfect for the home sewer with a thirst to learn how to create pieces for her own wardrobe.” — EcoSalon.com“Her new book is an excellent extension of the blog that includes a fantastic collection of nine patterns to create your own vintage-inspired wardrobe.” —SewNews.com“One of my favourite aspects of the book is that it pulls back the curtain on construction and reveals what the insides of the garments look like. It’s really helpful to take a peek at how another stitcher finishes her seams and keeps the whole thing hanging together—a very clever touch.” —Tilly and the Buttons“We love it, and we’re so excited to have it in hand. It’s wonderful to be able to infuse some “Gertie style” into our sewing. All the projects are great, and the layout of the book is really easy to use and navigate. It has a great vintage, yet modern look.” —Sew Mama Sew“Gertie’s New Book for Better Sewing is a fun, new pattern book, featuring sewing patterns that embody author Gretchen Hirsch’s fresh take on vintage style.”—CRAFTzine.com“If you read Gertie’s New Blog for Better Sewing, you already know that Gretchen Hirsch is all about teaching basic sewing skills that some of us (guilty!) may have skipped right over when we learned to sew. Now you can find all of Gretchen’s sewing knowledge in one place.” —MarthaStewartLiving.com“This is not down-and-dirty sewing, but studied and time consuming. Which is awesome.” —Angry Chicken“Since most women are a size bigger in the hips than in the waist, the pattern proportions in the book are already adjusted to take this difference into account. When I read this in the sizing guide, I actually got out of my chair and did a little happy dance. Three cheers for patterns that are actually shaped like the women who will be using them!” —The Zen of Making“This book overflows with pictures, drawings and diagrams to ensure your sewing success. She also includes a whopping 25 patterns, making this book a steal! Sure to be a reference for your sewing room and guaranteed to be a resource you turn to for zippers and buttons . . . even if you don’t make a single pencil skirt.” —Generation Q Magazine“If you are a fan of the mid-century vintage look, this book is a must-buy. Hirsch’s instructions are excellent, and use new technologies and techniques that didn’t exist 50 years ago.” —Examiner.com

When you are trying to learn something new, the best teachers are often the ones who will walk you slowly through all of the basics in a way that is straightforward and easy to understand. It is this approach to learning that has lead us to create “How Patterns Work”, so that those who wish to learn pattern making can have a simplified and streamlined introduction to all of the fundamental principles that lie at the core of pattern making. If you have tried to learn pattern making in the past and felt daunted by the complex drawings and measurements, or are a sewer who has felt ill equipped to make even the simplest changes to patterns, then this is the ideal book for you. We believe that by having a solid understanding of the basic terms and processes of pattern making then you will be able to make simple pattern changes yourself, and be able to apply the same ideas to more complex pattern changes in the future. No previous knowledge of pattern making is required. Chapters start from zero assumed knowledge and build slowly in complexity with step-by-step examples and clear diagrams. Please note that this book does not include paper patterns and does not cover specific pattern or block drafting exercises from measurements. Instead, this book will provide you with an overview to simplify the way you think about pattern making, arming you with knowledge that can be applied to any pattern change. As an introductory book, "How Patterns Work" has been designed to work as a companion alongside more complex pattern drafting books. In a way, the first half of the book is almost like a long form dictionary of pattern terms to help provide a thorough explanation of all the different features of patterns such as grain lines, seam allowances, darts and notches. All of the examples are discussed in relation to how the pattern will ultimately be sewn, so that the principles become more relevant to real sewn garments. The first section of the book will answer questions such as: What are darts and how do they work with the curves of the body? What is seam allowance and how much should you add to your pattern? How are body measurements used to create accurate patterns? What are blocks or slopers and how are they different to patterns? What do the basic blocks look like? The second half of the book shows a range of pattern making changes that can be learnt separately and can then be applied in different combinations to any garment patterns to suit your own pattern making needs. The reason why these pattern changes have been shown away from specific garments is to enable you to focus on the logic behind the pattern change, instead of becoming confused by the actual shape of the garment, or being distracted by working out body measurements. All of the examples listed below are shown using both the cut and spread, and the pivot flat pattern making methods, and then also shown as a draped section of fabric on a mannequin, allowing you to really see the pattern changes as both a flat pattern, and in a more tangible 3D form. The examples that are covered in this section include: Adding and removing a seam line. Moving the position of a dart. Turning darts into seam lines and vice versa. Increasing and decreasing volume evenly. Increasing and decreasing volume around a point. Using darts to increase volume. While the book can often appear very simple, our approach has been that when you are really stuck and feel like you are not quite "getting it", then a longer explanation with detailed diagrams can help the idea to really click, making it easier to apply the same pattern change in future."How Patterns Work" has been designed with over 250 black and white diagrams and has a comprehensive table of contents for easy reference.

In The Geometry of Hand-Sewing, Natalie Chanin and her Alabama Chanin and The School of Making teams present their breakthrough method, featuring illustrated instructions (for both right- and left-handed stitchers) for more than 100 stitches.Their lessons range from the most basic straight and chain to the more fanciful feather and herringbone; photos of both right and wrong sides; and guidelines for modifying stitches to further increase one’s repertoire. As makers, we tend to learn different stitches over time without thinking much about how they relate to one another. But when Natalie Chanin and her Alabama Chanin and The School of Making teams began to look at needlework closely, they realized all stitches are based on geometric grid systems—and by using grids as guides, they could make learning stitches, even seemingly elaborate ones, as easy as child’s play. Chapters include: A New Way to Think about Sewing and Embroidery For the Love of Tools Basic Stitches Enhancing Stitches Manipulating Grids Patterned Stitches There is also an Index of Design Choices and a Stitch Index. To simplify learning, the book includes two plastic stitching cards die-cut with the grids on which every stitch in the book is based. These reusable cards can be stitched through for practicing (just as children use lacing cards to learn to tie shoes) or used as stencils for transferring grids to fabric.Chanin writes in her introduction, “The art of making can change your life, help you become a more informed consumer, and aid you in passing on important knowledge to the next generation. I know that I am my best self when I am making and sharing. I hope the lessons in this book will instill you with confidence, deepen your love for the arts of hand sewing and embroidery, and inspire you to share your love of making with others.”
