This redesigned and expanded third edition of Diabetes Snacks, Treats, and Easy Eats for Kids offers even more simple, delicious recipes for healthy, well-balanced diets.Since the book was first published in 2006, the prevalence of diabetes in children has continued to increase. Children under age 19 have seen a 21 percent increase in Type 1 cases, and children ages 10–19 have seen a 30 percent increase in cases of Type 2—a disease that used to be considered an adult condition. But kids will be kids, and when they come home from school, they want a snack that's simple, satisfying, and occasionally sweet. When it comes to dinner, they usually don't have the time or the taste for fancy meals. With this in mind, author Barbara Grunes has developed more than 150 recipes for snacks and meals that kids really like and that stay within diabetic guidelines.Grunes's goal is to help all kids enjoy food that is good for them—even if they have diabetes. Each recipe includes the nutritional information readers need, whether they count carbs or use the exchange method. With recipes like Pizza Puffs, Spud Pancakes, Chicken Fajitas, Ice Cream Cone Cupcakes, and Fruit Turnovers, this book proves that everyone can enjoy familiar and delicious food together. After all, it's not about "good," "bad," or "forbidden" foods—it's about readers feeding their families sensibly.

One of the NHL’s most talented young stars shares his inspiring coming-of-age story about following his dreams after being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.A portion of proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to JDRF, the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes research.“Max, you have type 1 diabetes,” the doctor said.My mom and I looked at each other. For her, time stood still for a second as our entire future as a family shifted. But I had no clue what the diagnosis meant. So I said the first thing that came to mind.“Can I still play hockey?” As a kid, when Max Domi was asked what he wanted to be when he grew up, he only ever had one answer: a hockey player. Growing up the son of a professional hockey player—Tie Domi—Max saw from an early age what it took to make the NHL: grit, talent, and the support of a team. Over countless hours in the garage, at the rink, and in the gym, Max chased his dream. It seemed that Max was born to be on the ice.But then, when he was twelve years old, Max started getting sick. And sicker. Eventually, he and his family learned the truth: Max had type 1 diabetes.Overnight, Max and his family found their lives upended. All Max wanted was to be a normal kid, but suddenly, the simplest things—a game of basketball with friends, a family meal, a school field trip—were complicated with a thousand different considerations. Would people notice or make fun of him if he carried his blood-testing kit everywhere? Would his teammates think he was weak if his blood sugar went low at hockey practice? How much insulin did he need after a meal? And all the while, the fear of what might happen if things went wrong hung over his head. Max had to grow up quickly. As he struggled to find his new normal, Max slowly began to realize that overcoming his disease demanded the same qualities that it took to be a hockey player—mental and physical toughness, maturity, and the love and care of family and friends. Bit by bit, he learned—sometimes the hard way—not just to control his diabetes, but to turn it into an advantage. If managing his disease was going to demand that Max be stronger, more prepared, and more disciplined than anyone else, then he wouldn’t just be good at those things: he’d be the best. He’d do whatever it took to move him closer to his dream of playing in the NHL.Inspiring, heartwarming, and exciting, No Days Off is a memoir about what it’s like to be a kid whose world is turned upside down, and what it takes to face adversity.

Thank you. || For those considering or already using Continuous Glucose Monitoring, this book takes you beyond the basics and shows you a better way to manage. Interested in eating whatever you like? Prefer a low carb diet? Either way this book will show you how. Sugar Surfing is the first book written to debunk the myths surrounding classic diabetes management while also teaching the reader a better way. More than 50 full color images help the reader to break through the over-reliance on ratios and static thinking which live at the root of unexpected highs and lows; especially for people who already work hard. The traditional method taught by well meaning medical providers is woefully inadequate given the recent advancements in continuous glucose monitoring (CGM). With real time feedback including direction and rate of change, even novice users get better results almost immediately when they use this Endocrinologists' dynamic approach to managing in the moment. Online resources complement the book by giving readers direct access to the authors. Steve has had type 1 diabetes for more than 50 years while Kevin is a diabetes Dad and behavioral researcher since 2001. Working together for more than a decade, these two pioneers have helped thousands of people to gain control and live a more normal life in spite of diabetes. *** Register for updates at sugarsurfing.com. Managing type 1 diabetes during pregnancy is an incredibly overwhelming yet rewarding pursuit. It's about so much more than just counting your carbs and getting exercise. Due to constantly increasing hormones during pregnancy, your insulin needs constantly change, too. While no two women's pregnancies will be alike, the timing of those anticipated insulin adjustments will be similar. In this book, Ginger Vieira and Jennifer Smith, CDE & RD, guide you through preparing for pregnancy, from conception to birth, and through the challenges of managing your blood sugars during postpartum.REVIEWS:" Wow, there’s so much information! The first part of the book, Preparing for Pregnancy, is presented quite well. It gives a WWT1D all the information she needs to prepare for pregnancy. But, I have to say, having lived vicariously through three pregnancies I think the Month-To-Month guide is brilliant. It should be read twice. First, all at once, to help a woman plan and prepare for the different stages of pregnancy. Then, slowly, as each phase opens and each experience becomes as emotional as it is physical. A wonderful guide. The personal testimonials that close out the book are a very nice touch." -Victor Van Beuren, Senior Acquisitions Director of ADA Books"If you have type 1 diabetes and are contemplating having a baby, before you do anything—and that means anything at all—make sure you grab a copy of Pregnancy With Type 1 Diabetes by Ginger Vieira, CHC, CPT and Jennifer C. Smith, RD, CDE. The book is subtitled 'Your Month-to-Month Guide to Blood Sugar Management,' but it’s so much more, it will likely be referred to as 'the Type 1 pregnancy bible' before long."-Nancy Kaneshiro, DiabeticLifestyle.com"Ginger and co-author Jennifer Smith wanted to create a guide specifically designed to help women with type 1 diabetes meet those challenges. As mothers with diabetes themselves, they know what it’s like to feel the fear of being pregnant while managing diabetes. Ginger has lived with type 1 diabetes and celiac disease since 1999, has written several books about diabetes, and is part of the editorial team at DiabetesDaily.com. Jenny, a Certified Diabetes Educator and Registered Dietitian, has lived with type 1 diabetes since 1990 and works as a diabetes coach for people across the globe. They will both soon be mothers of two children (Ginger is expecting her second child in May!). Their book Pregnancy with Type 1 Diabetes is not just an informative tool and resource, but is also a source of personal support, encouragement, and inspiration for all mothers-to-be with type 1 diabetes."-Amelia Dmowska, diaTribe.org

A practical, empowering guide to managing and reversing prediabetes through diet and exercise, from a registered dietitian. Affecting 79 million Americans, prediabetes often develops into full-blown type 2 diabetes, one of the leading causes of death in the United States. Increasingly diagnosed by doctors, prediabetes is a condition in which blood sugar levels are elevated, but not yet high enough to be labeled diabetes. While diabetes cannot be cured, prediabetes can be reversed, so it is critical to take action at an early stage. In straightforward, jargon-free language, The Prediabetes Diet Plan explains insulin resistance (the underlying cause of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes) and offers a comprehensive strategy of diet and lifestyle change, which has been proven more effective than medication. With sections on meal planning, grocery shopping, dining out, supplements, and exercise, this book empowers you to make healthier everyday choices that can effect real change on your insulin levels and overall well-being.

I have diabetes. I’ve lived with it for years and years. I’ve done everything to learn as much as I can about it. I’ve made more idiot mistakes—accidentally and on purpose—with diabetes than you think would be safe. I’ve managed to stay very healthy. And by some standards, my life is pretty “normal.”Throughout my extended career as a person with diabetes, the most important fact I have learned is that ANY BIT BETTER (…3%...5%...28%...91%...) IS STILL BETTER. It might be the most important thing you can know about your diabetes. Maybe we can’t make it go away.Maybe we can’t make it perfect. Maybe we’re still mad that we got stuck with it. But we absolutely CAN make it BETTER. It’s not always easy, but it’s not complicated either. Diabetes gets Better if you make it Better.

A collection of cartoons inspired by the diabetes lifestyle, these illustrations span a period of more than a decade. Starting out as nothing more than a few doodles and growing to represent a lifetime of personal struggles and experiences after life changing eye surgeries in the author's early 20s. During that period she stubbornly continued to write in her journal and fingerpaint in colors she couldn’t see. As she gradually recovered partial vision, Haidee rediscovered her love for the simplicity and straightforwardness of pen & ink. The cartoons in One Lump or Two mark a significant chapter in Haidee’s artistic life that she overcame with humor.
