From the clamshell razors and homemade lye depilatories used in colonial America to the diode lasers and prescription pharmaceuticals available today, Americans have used a staggering array of tools to remove hair deemed unsightly, unnatural, or excessive. This is true especially for women and girls; conservative estimates indicate that 99% of American women have tried hair removal, and at least 85% regularly remove hair from their faces, armpits, legs, and bikini lines. How and when does hair become a problem—what makes some growth “excessive”? Who or what separates the necessary from the superfluous? \nIn Plucked, historian Rebecca Herzig addresses these questions about hair removal. She shows how, over time, dominant American beliefs about visible hair changed: where once elective hair removal was considered a “mutilation” practiced primarily by “savage” men, by the turn of the twentieth century, hair-free faces and limbs were expected for women. Visible hair growth—particularly on young, white women—came to be perceived as a sign of political extremism, sexual deviance, or mental illness. By the turn of the twenty-first century, more and more Americans were waxing, threading, shaving, or lasering themselves smooth. Herzig’s extraordinary account also reveals some of the collateral damages of the intensifying pursuit of hair-free skin. Moving beyond the experiences of particular patients or clients, Herzig describes the surprising histories of race, science, industry, and medicine behind today's hair-removing tools. Plucked is an unsettling, gripping, and original tale of the lengths to which Americans will go to remove hair.

My name is Tina Alberino and I wrote this book to save you. This is not another lame book full of recycled beauty business advice. This book serves as the literary equivalent of a kick in the ass and a punch to the throat. You hold in your hands a raw depiction of the true nature of this industry and a compendium of harsh lessons. The vast majority of these lessons aren’t taught in schools and don't appear in textbooks; they're learned through experience—often in a way that is less-than-gentle. This book will help you navigate the sometimes tumultuous waters of the beauty business; they run deep, the currents are swift, and the tides shift quickly. The journey can certainly be treacherous. Don't learn these lessons the hard way.

As skin care professionals, we are frequently presented with clients’ skin concerns relating to hyperpigmentation disorders, or the uneven distribution of visible melanin in the skin. The source of this spotty disarray can be a combination of factors, with sun exposure being universally recognized as a primary cause. Evidence of adolescent inflammatory acne may be present decades later, compounding damage from new breakouts at the onset of mid-life. 100 In men and women, hormonal fluctuations, smoking, and a history of excessive/aggressive treatments are known to trigger the production of melanin. The biomedical research of skin mechanisms that create melanin have allowed a discerning look into the topical agents currently in the professional skin care market, used across skin types and age ranges.

"She" is an entrepreneur who pursued her goals, designed her life, and loved every inch of it. She wasn’t worried about what “they” were doing or how they defined success. She didn’t listen to what they had to say because she wasn’t doing it for “them.” She set her own standards and priorities. She pursued her goals and lived life to its fullest potential. She kept her head in the clouds and her feet on the ground. She stayed focused on the joie de vivre, celebrating the joy of life with each and every tiny victory. My hope is that by the end of this book, “she” is you. I will walk you through how I became this woman— and how you can become her too.
