"Mio caro Enrico, tu non mi ami più, io non ti amo più nemmeno - e siamo pari. Te l'avevo predetto! Tu mi hai visto attizzare il fuoco, e far la calza; io ti ho visto stendere tranquillamente i colori sulle tue stupide fotografie, senza ispirazione e senza entusiasmo; ecco perché non ci amiamo più. Le asprezze, i diverbi, le amarezze, sono degli accessori. Domani forse saremmo arrivati a picchiarci! Ti lascio, e credo far del bene anche a te. Tu hai bisogno di sognare per buscarti gloria e quattrini; io non ho che la mia giovinezza, e bisogna che ne approfitti se non voglio andare a finire all'ospedale. Enrico, dopo i primi tempi di sofferenza, si riprende e presto riesce ad affermarsi come pittore ottenendo la gloria e l'agiatezza che desiderava. Il giovane viene così ripreso dal desiderio di riconquistare la donna ma non riesce perché Eva ha un amante. Enrico lo sfida a duello ferendolo e alla fine, nuovamente povero, ammalato di tubercolosi, piena la mente del ricordo della donna e infelice per il proprio fallimento, muore al suo paese nella casa paterna.
