"Eboli - dicono i lucani tra cui Levi fu mandato al confino dal fascismo - e l'ultimo paese di cristiani. Cristiano è uguale a uomo. Nei paesi successivi, i nostri, non si vive da cristiani, ma da animali". Dice Italo Calvino in uno dei due testi che introducono questo volume: "La peculiarità di Carlo Levi sta in questo: che egli è il testimone della presenza di un altro tempo all'interno del nostro tempo, è l'ambasciatore d'un altro mondo all'interno del nostro mondo. Possiamo definire questo mondo il mondo che vive fuori della nostra storia di fronte al mondo che vive nella storia. Naturalmente questa è una definizione esterna, è, diciamo, la situazione di partenza dell'opera di Carlo Levi: il protagonista di 'Cristo si è fermato a Eboli' è un uomo impegnato nella storia che viene a trovarsi nel cuore di un Sud stregonesco, magico, e vede che quelle che erano per lui le ragioni in gioco qui non valgono più, sono in gioco altre ragioni, altre opposizioni nello stesso tempo più complesse e più elementari".

La soluzione arriverà, forse troppo tardi, in termini di giorni, forse troppo presto, in termini di secoli.

Eva Eva è un romanzo di Giovanni Verga scritto e pubblicato nel 1873 a Milano dall'editore Treves. « Avevo incontrato due volte quella donna - non era più bella di tutte le altre, né più elegante, ma non somigliava a nessun'altra. - Nei suoi occhi c'erano sguardi affascinanti, come il corruscare di un'esistenza procellosa che era pieno di attrattive. - Giovanni Verga, Eva » Quello che rappresenta la novità del romanzo, apparso a Milano nel 1873, è il personaggio femminile che il Verga, come scrive Giovanni Croci, "disegna, mostrandosi già scrittore avveduto, con una scioltezza di tratto, con una asciuttezza e verità di toni davvero sorprendenti". Durante un veglione in maschera che si tiene a La Pergola di Firenze, un arlecchino, un povero pittore di nome Enrico Lanti arrivato dalla Sicilia per trovar fortuna, scommette con alcuni giovani che riuscirà a baciare una bella mascherina. Si reca in seguito sul palco e inizia a raccontare, ad un suo amico scrittore che ha incontrato casualmente, il suo amore per la maschera che vuole baciare. Si tratta di Eva che si guadagna la vita facendo la ballerina di lusso e della quale Enrico si è follemente innamorato. Eva lo ricambia pur continuando a condurre la sua vita spregiudicata. Quando però si rende conto che il giovane è tormentato dalla gelosia, decide di dividere con lui le privazioni e lasciare la sua vita. Ella si renderà però presto conto che, perduti gli splendori tra i quali Enrico l'ha conosciuta, ha perso per lui ogni attrazione e quindi, senza drammi ma con molto realismo, dopo avergli scritto una lettera equilibrata e lucida, lo lascia e ritorna alla vita di prima. "Mio caro Enrico, tu non mi ami più, io non ti amo più nemmeno - e siamo pari. Te l'avevo predetto! Tu mi hai visto attizzare il fuoco, e far la calza; io ti ho visto stendere tranquillamente i colori sulle tue stupide fotografie, senza ispirazione e senza entusiasmo; ecco perché non ci amiamo più. Le asprezze, i diverbi, le amarezze, sono degli accessori. Domani forse saremmo arrivati a picchiarci! Ti lascio, e credo far del bene anche a te. Tu hai bisogno di sognare per buscarti gloria e quattrini; io non ho che la mia giovinezza, e bisogna che ne approfitti se non voglio andare a finire all'ospedale. Tu hai il cuore buono; ti ho parlato con franchezza, e credo perciò di non lasciarti in collera. Io ti voglio sempre del bene, e te lo proverò, quando potrò. Eccoti 500 lire." Enrico, dopo i primi tempi di sofferenza, si riprende e presto riesce ad affermarsi come pittore ottenendo la gloria e l'agiatezza che desiderava. Il giovane viene così ripreso dal desiderio di riconquistare la donna ma non riesce perché Eva ha un amante. Enrico lo sfida a duello ferendolo e alla fine, nuovamente povero, ammalato di tubercolosi, piena la mente del ricordo della donna e infelice per il proprio fallimento, muore al suo paese nella casa paterna.
