As any herpetologist will tell you, the fer-de-lance is among the most dreaded snakes known to man. When someone makes a present of one to Nero Wolfe, Archie Goodwin knows he's getting dreadully close to solving the devilishly clever murders of an immigrant and a college president. As for Wolfe, he's playing snake charmer in a case with more twists than an anaconda -- whistling a seductive tune he hopes will catch a killer who's still got poison in his heart.

From 1942 to 1945, a small, influential group of media figures willingly volunteered their services to form the Writers' War Board (WWB), accepting requests from government agencies to create propaganda. Members included mystery writer Rex Stout, Pulitzer and Nobel Prize winner Pearl S. Buck, novelist and sports writer Paul Gallico, Book-of-the-Month Club editor and popular radio host Clifton Fadiman, and Broadway lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II. The WWB mobilized thousands of other writers across the country to spread its campaigns through articles, public appearances, radio broadcasts, and more. The WWB received federal money while retaining its status as a private organization that could mount campaigns without government oversight. Historian Thomas Howell argues that this unique position has caused its history to fall between the cracks, since it was not recognized as an official part of the government's war effort. Yet the WWB's work had a huge impact on the nation's wartime culture, and this fascinating history will inform contemporary thinking on propaganda, the media, and American society.

Bitter End, the first novella length adventure featuring Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin, appeared in the November 1940 issue of The American Magazine. The story, which is dark and complex, explores the family, business and personal relationships of the owners and employees of a specialty food manufacturer. Wolfe has a personal encounter with one of their products that has been poisoned and feels compelled to investigate Before there was Nero Wolfe there were others, detectives such a Canby Rankin, Dol Bonner, and Tecumseh who paved the road for the most famous of Stout's detectives. The Last Drive features Canby Rankin, the "Southerner who had turned detective," in a story serialized in Golfers Magazine. The story can be viewed as a precursor of Fer-de-Lance, the first Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin novel-length mystery, in the sense that the device used here is almost identical to the murder weapon at the center of Fer-de-Lance.

Here are two Rex Stout short stories for war buffs and Nero Wolfe fans alike. In Not Quite Dead Enough, Archie Goodwin, Nero Wolfes perennial legman, literally steals the limelight. Recently inducted into Army Intelligence, Archie goes to Wolfes flat to see why he hasnt been answering his or the Army recruiters calls. Wolfe could be dead, but Archie later finds out that he has been training to join the Army. It takes the murder of a woman Archie goes dancing with to get Nero Wolfe to investigate crime again. The wartime theme continues in Booby Trap as Archie and Wolfe investigate the murder of Captain Albert Cross, killed only hours before he was to make a report about a prototype grenade theft to the group of intelligence people Wolfe works with. Listener favorite Michael Prichard, named by Smart Money magazine as one of the Top Ten Golden Voices, precisely captures the characters personalities and the atmosphere of the story locations.
